For nearly 30 years, Davidson Housing Coalition has worked to ensure that safe haven is available to all who wish to call Davidson home, regardless of their income. DHC was one of the Davidson Community Foundation’s first nonprofit partners.
During the COVID pandemic, DCF provided support for DHC residents who could not afford their rent. And in March, 2024, as the Housing Coalition intensified its efforts to identify new opportunities to add rental units to its existing inventory, the two organizations joined forces again.
“Land prices are prohibitively high and prevent us from choosing new sites for construction right now,” said DHC Executive Director Connie Wessner. “But demand for affordable rentals continues to increase. So, we’re re-evaluating the property we own to use it more effectively and efficiently in support of our mission.”
Davidson Housing Coalition shared its plans to reduce its office space to facilitate construction of a new 2-bedroom apartment and a community room for residents’ use in the organization’s Creekside Corner neighborhood. The DCF board responded by making a $35,000 grant in support of the project. The grant proved to be a catalyst for additional fundraising during Summer 2024. Design and permitting work began in September and construction started in late December.
DHC’s new apartment is already leased, and the new office and community room opened in mid-February, providing a welcoming space for residents and future residents as well as a much-needed meeting space residents to gather.
DHC currently serves nearly 75 families with quality homes and apartments they can afford.
